The girls’ varsity soccer team officially ended the season last week with great matches by the girls. With the guidance and leadership of coach Amalfitano, the team had an incredibly successful season full of growth and hope for the future.
At the beginning of the season on September 10th, the team scored an impressive eight goals in a win against Jamaica High School. They continued this winning streak with another 8-0 win against Martin Van Buren High School. Two more games, two more wins against Springfield Gardens High School and Far Rockaway Educational Campus High School. Only halfway into the season, the team had already won four consecutive games in a row.
Team members expressed how proud they are of this season’s performance and how the girls have displayed remarkable growth. Coach Amalfitano credits their success to ”practice starting in August.” Practice is a significant part of building skills, muscle memory, and team chemistry.
Junior Sarah Caceras elaborated on how training could improve their skills in a short amount of time, such as learning “new tricks and how to run faster,” which demonstrates built endurance.
Senior Melanny Uruga said, “I’m really proud of how far the team has come.” She mentioned how it was a beautiful experience seeing how the girls had improved both “physically and emotionally.” Her reflection shows how much unity and trust had developed within the team.
Since they have gotten more comfortable with each other on and off the field, it led to an increase in confidence and communication. She also highlights her JV soccer coach, Ms. Jackson, for always believing in her and teaching her how to play better.
These improvements made by the girls’ varsity soccer team are one of good relationships and dedication. “Over the years, everyone has improved in order for us to come this far,” senior Destiny Delgado said. Team chemistry played a big role as teammates gave each other tips on how to efficiently play as well as giving each other praise when performing better. Moments like these emphasize how the team’s bond has become just as important as their skill.

Overall, the girls’ varsity soccer team had an incredibly successful season due to their perseverance and commitment to the team. Despite facing bumps in the road with losses against Thomas Edison High School in their last two games, the willingness of each member to practice and work together has contributed to amazing achievements.
This show of talent and hard work has allowed the team to make it to the playoffs, which will take place on October 26th against the High School For Math, Science, and Engineering at CCNY (HSMSE at CCNY).
The team has changed how students think about the program and has driven high hopes for the future. “This season proved to me that the girls have improved since their last games and I hope we can see more wins from them as they continue to develop their skills,” says junior Kiara Diaz.
