Xbox have now found themselves in a serious blunder with both community engagement and their financial strategy. This year, Xbox has recently raised its prices twice from the original $500 to $650 on their Series X console Their new handheld device, Xbox ROG Ally, now retails for a staggering $1,000, when the industry standard is only around $500-$600. Moreover, to access the games on this console, users must subscribe to a revamped Game Pass system that introduces new features, but at a steep cost. By adding features nobody asked for, Microsoft broke a Game Pass system that had been reliable for years.

For many gamers, affordability is what made Xbox Game Pass appealing – especially younger players, college students, and families who don’t have enough budget to buy every new release. Instead of paying $70 per game, they could access hundreds of titles for a reasonable monthly fee. Yet the classic subscription has recently seen a 50% price hike. It particularly affects the Ultimate tier, Microsoft’s best-selling option. It has jumped from $20 to $30 per month. Microsoft claims the extra $10 a month is justified by perks like EA-Play, Ubisoft+, and Fortnite Crew. But honestly, these are add-ons that few people have asked for, and they don’t justify paying $360 a year for a subscription that used to be affordable for everyday gamers who depended on it to make gaming accessible.
However, lower tier subscriptions have been stripped down, resulting in the removal of access to a surplus of games. This unreasonable cut in beloved features have left a scar within the gaming community alike. And forcing supporters to play an outrageous system that loses its value immediately has damaged trust. Additionally, Microsoft plans to introduce commercial advertisements to increase revenue towards these lower tiers. These pop-up advertisements will interrupt players in the middle of a gaming session. That’s not innovation; that’s corporate greed and it’s a slap to the face for loyal players.

The timing of this shift has drawn widespread criticisms, as many see Microsoft’s leadership as disconnected from consumer concerns. The gaming community didn’t take kindly to Xbox’s shift from their “consumer friendly” philosophy to what many now label “corporate greed.” Between October 1st and 2nd, millions of players cancelled their subscriptions in protest, overwhelming their servers and crashing the main sites and financial services portal. As Windows Central found, “The backlash is real. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’s 50% price hike has sparked mass cancellations…so many that Microsoft’s site is struggling to load.” That’s not just frustration; that’s a revolution. A revolution meant to send a message to Microsoft’s top executives that things cannot remain this way.
Respected voices in the gaming world responded to this growing scandal. In the commentary YouTube channel known as Belluar News, the creator discussed these issues in his video recent video, stating, “Ultimate is just $30 a month, which is of course $360 a year … .in places like Brazil, the monthly price has doubled” (4:43-5:06). His commentary highlights not only the financial burden on players but also the global inequities of Xbox’s pricing strategy. That’s not just numbers; it’s proof that Microsoft is alienating its global player base, reducing it to countries that don’t have such a high price hike.
Even IGN, a reputable gaming site, community polling revealed the damages. 45% of respondents said they’re no longer interested in subscribing to Game Pass at all, while nearly 30% said they’d reluctantly continue despite the Xbox price hike. In response to the uproar of Xbox’s community, Dustin Blackwell, Director of Gaming and Platform Communications at Microsoft headquarters, told The Verge, an online publication covering gaming and technology, “We understand price increases are never fun for anybody…we’re listening to the feedback of players.” But that weak acknowledgement didn’t calm the storm.
As a longtime fan, I can’t help but feel betrayed. I’ve been subscribed for over three years, and I’m disappointed because Xbox had everything going for them to be successful this year and even years ahead. Then it all came crashing down like a house of cards. These changes have pushed me to stop trusting Microsoft and Xbox, and to look for alternatives in the gaming industry where I can spend my assets wisely. For students balancing school, budgets, and entertainment, this matters even more to you. Every dollar spent is a choice about what kind of company you support. Either stop supporting a greedy corporation by cancelling or find another alternative that respects your financial reality.
Even though Microsoft’s methods of damage control have been questionable, longtime fans expressed the collective feeling of betrayal. The bundled payment model doesn’t grant the full access to materials of either library, leaving users with a restricted experience that feels more like a smoke and mirror than genuine entertainment value. If the brand insists on squeezing its players dry, maybe it’s time to look at the competition, Playstation, Nintendo, or even Steam. Gaming should be entertainment, not as a way to milk the consumers dry; and while Microsoft is obviously a business that needs to make money, squeezing players with unnecessary hikes undermines the very joy and escape that gaming is meant to provide.
In the end, Xbox’s price hikes and hollow “features” aren’t just disappointing, they’re a wake-up call. Why trust a company that tosses its loyal fanbase to the side when profits are on the line? Loyalty shouldn’t be monetized and if Microsoft won’t respect its players, then the smartest move is to cancel, or invest our time and money in companies that still do.
At what point does valuing loyalty stop being mutual and start becoming one sided?
